Dwayne Bacon’s brother Raheem Bacon was killed in a shooting that happened in Lakeland, Florida, his family has confirmed according to multiple reports. Raheem Bacon, 25, a rap and hip-hop artist and father of two, was widely known as “350heem.”

The shooting occurred on Friday night during a “celebrity party” event that was hosted by Dwayne Bacon in Jade Fox Lounge of his native Lakeland to promote the release of Raheem Bacon’s latest mixtape. According to the police, officers responded to a disturbance in a parking lot outside the Lounge and found that Bacon and an unidentified 48-year-old woman had been shot. Bacon was taken to a local hospital and was declared to have died prior to his arrival. The woman was hospitalized with serious wounds.

So far there’s been an arrest of a 23-year-old woman named Jamilah Johnson while a gun that was reported to be stolen was found in the parking lot. No charges regarding the shooting have been made.

Like his brother Dwayne, Raheem Bacon also played varsity basketball. In 2021 he signed with the famous Motown Records, reportedly becoming the first artist from Lakeland to sign with a major music label.

Dwayne Bacon, a former NBAer, last played with Panathinaikos Athens in EuroLeague. He was previously a member of AS Monaco in 2021-22.

Russian-born former EuroLeague and EuroBasket champion Lazaros Papadopoulos uploaded a video on his social media where he slams Russia for the invasion into Ukraine.

Papadopoulos, a retired Greek player who was born in Krasnodar in 1980 when the Soviet Union existed, spoke in Russian and described the war as “an invasion by a dictatorial regime into a free country to “establish tyranny.” His full statement  is as follows:

“I am Lazaros Papadopoulos and I was born in Krasnodar. Today I live in Greece and I have the opportunity to freely express my position about the invasion of Russian armies onto Ukrainian soil.

Unfortunately, there are no institutions in Russia so that people could be able to express their opinion and prevent aggression. I, as a Russian-speaking Greek who was born and lived in a totalitarian state, can evaluate the situation better and compare life between a free society where thoughts can be expressed, and a society in which people go to prison because they think.

In this difficult moment, I can’t stay silent and I can’t but call all Russian-speaking people who live in free countries to express their position.

My position is that this isn’t just a war of Russia against Ukraine but an invasion by a dictatorship regime onto the soil of a free country with the goal of establishing tyranny.

I want to express my deep sympathy to all the Ukrainian people and to tell you that you not only defend your country but that you defend democracy and Freedom. I want to tell you that you are not alone in this battle. Thank you.”

Papadopoulos moved to Greece from Russia in 1990. A 7-foot center, he won the 2002 EuroLeague championship with Panathinaikos Athens and 2012 title with Olympiacos Piraeus while also playing for such clubs as Real Madrid, Dynamo Moscow and Thessaloniki teams PAOK and Iraklis.

As a member of the Greek national team, he became a EuroBasket champion in 2005 and silver medalist in the 2006 World Cup.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in the early hours of Thursday has sent shockwaves around the world and the basketball world has united in the call for a ceasefire in the area.

Among those using their medium to send a strong anti-war message is legendary Spanish basketball figure Pau Gasol, a UNICEF ambassador and founder of the Gasol Foundation that is working towards eradicating childhood obesity.

In his statement on social media, Gasol calls for immediate action to end the war on Ukrainian territory:

“I want to join the calls for a ceasefire in Ukraine. War is never the solution. Lots of people, including thousands of children, are suffering the consequences of this dramatic conflict. There is only one way: peace and dialogue”.

Shortly after Gasol’s statement, Sacramento Kings’ Alex Len and Toronto Raptors’ Svi Mykhailiuk have joined forces and with a statement also published on social media, they stand in support of their homeland, Ukraine, condemning all acts of violence.

Their statement reads:

“A great tragedy befell our dear homeland Ukraine. We categorically condemn the war. Ukraine is a peaceful, sovereign state inhabited by people who want to decide their own destiny. We pray for our families, friends, relatives and all the people who are in the territory of Ukraine. We hope for an end to this terrible war as soon as possible. Dear fellow Ukrainians, hold on! Our strength is in unity! We are with you!”

Netflix unveiled the first teaser of the upcoming film “Hustle” that will feature Utah Jazz forward Juancho Hernangomez.

The movie is co-produced by LeBron James and Adam Sandler, who also has the starring role. Per IMDB, it’s about “A washed-up basketball scout” who “discovers a phenomenal streetball player while in Spain and sees the prospect as his opportunity to get back into the NBA.”

Sandler plays the scout while the streetball player from Spain is the actually Spanish Hernangomez in his movie debut. Queen Latifah, Ben Foster and Robert Duvall also star in the film along with former two-time NBA champion and current TNT analyst Kenny Smith plus NBA veteran and 2019 champ Kyle Lowry.

The Philadelphia 76ers seem to be a central part of the film and there are scenes with Sixers coach Doc Rivers, Seth Curry (now a Brooklyn Net but a Sixer when the movie was shot), Matisse Thybulle and Tyrese Maxey.

Former NBAer Ty Lawson was arrested in Madrid, Spain for two altercations according to Spanish news agency EFE.

EFE reports, citing police sources, that Lawson injured a customer in an Italian restaurant by throwing a glass at him Saturday (6/2). The victim, that required stitches, informed the police that the perpetrator was a “well-known basketball player” and police issued a “search and arrest” order.

Later that day, Lawson was arrested when he was involved in an altercation in central Ibiza street.

Lawson is also reported to cause a commotion in Madrid’s Barajas Airport by having a “violent attitude.” He was on his way to Santo Domingo via transit but Iberia employees didn’t allow him to board the plane and authorities had to escort him to take another flight.

Throughout his career, Lawson played in 587 NBA games from 2009 to 2017 with the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings.

Vassilis Spanoulis made the decision to retire earlier in the summer and all the goodbyes that have been made since have now become official as Olympiacos legend held his retirement press conference this Monday (September 27).

“I had a long voyage in basketball. I learned a lot, I experienced moments I couldn’t imagine. I created my family, but what I have experienced is unimaginable. I experienced moments that eventually made me lose my hair,” Spanoulis started off.

“I was not always a good teammate, meaning that I was really hard with my teammates. I talked to them and they know I did it for the team. I think I inspired a lot of people to never give up and do more than expected,” he said and that statement might have been perfectly followed up later on by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s message, which in a way confirmed that the Milwaukee Bucks star has been one of the inspired people.

“You have a killer mentality and I learned a lot from you. Thank you, we love you,” Giannis said and added. “Without Nikos Galis, there wouldn’t be a Vassilis Spanoulis. And without Vassilis Spanoulis, there wouldn’t be a Giannis Antetokounmpo. I want to take the baton also in the Greek national team.”

Spanoulis welcomed Giannis’ praise and returned the favor. “I want to thank Giannis for his words, I am happy because my kids are living in the era of the Antetokounmpo-mania and they are hearing this.”

Kill Bill also thanked everybody that helped him throughout his career but a special place in his heart went to Olympiacos and, while acknowledging that many players encounter bad experiences, his path was full of blessings.

“I played for Marousi, Panathinaikos, the NBA, PAO again, but Olympiacos proved to be my Ithaca. I want to thank the presidents, we had our moments, good and bad, but we were on the same page, my coaches and teammates and also my family, my brother and my mother. I have heard that many athletes have experienced depression when they retire. I feel full of experiences, I am blessed and I feel I have done everything. I was injured, I tried to come back but that was it. I say all this without notes, from my heart, as I always do.”

Olympiacos owners Giorgos and Panagiotis Aggelopoulos shared some words as well, starting with how hard it was to actually bring over Spanoulis to the club.

“Back in 2010 it was a strategic choice for us to get one of the best players of Panathinaikos and it wasn’t easy,” Giorgos said while Panagiotis admitted the future will definitely feel different. “Olympiacos will return to the Final Four, we might win the EuroLeague but we will never experience the same feelings.”

They also confirmed that Spanoulis’s jersey with number seven will be retired, however, the fans will have to wait for a full year as the ceremony is planned for September 2022. Number seven will be the first-ever jersey retired by the club.

While Dusan Duda Ivkovic’s funeral will be held on Tuesday (September 21), the commemoration in the Serbian Parliament was held one day earlier as many of the country’s greats, especially so from the basketball world, were present to bid their farewell.

Names such as Dragan Kicanovic, Dejan Bodiroga, Bozidar Maljkovic, Dusko Vujosevic, and Svetislav Pesic were present as was Dimitris Itoudis who just a day ago won the VTB SuperCup with CSKA.

Two names, however, that were perhaps the closest to him from the basketball world, got the privilege to hold a speech – Zeljko Obradovic and Predrag Danilovic.

The commemoration started with actor Goran Sultanovic recalling the bits and pieces of Duda’s biography along with the many recognitions he received. The President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic followed with Danilovic and Obradovic taking the next turns.

“There is nothing to add about the biography of Dusan Ivkovic. I am proud that Serbia had such a man and that it will have such a man. Dusan is great, he did go physically, but he didn’t go. No one will forget him. And those are not courteous words. He is the bearer of a different spirit. He is a lot that many of us are not. He was a great gentleman. He left a lot for future generations,” the President said.

Danilovic, in the role of the Serbian Basketball Federation President, but also as a close friend and someone who played (and won) under Ivkovic, tried to say as much as he could while visibly shaken and holding back tears.

“I am here as the president of the Federation and I have an obligation to emphasize that the Federation would not be like this if it weren’t for him. The whole of European and world basketball is reaping the fruits of his work. Basketball was not a part of his life, but his life. This was pretty hard for me. I am proud that, during his life, I said that I love and respect him. And that I will love him all my life as well as his family. In recent months, there has not been a day that we haven’t heard from each other. I consulted with him first. He will always be my coach, he was and he will remain.”

Obradovic came prepared, the same way he does in basketball, but the words on paper weren’t enough for him and so he had to finish from the heart.

“Gone is the man who was everything to me, a teacher, a coach, a godfather, a friend. He left an indelible mark behind. His legacy is huge. He educated a large number of players and made them better people. I met him in the late seventies. He invited me to play for the national team, he showed me great respect. I still use his advice today. He had a sense of humor. He knew how to explain, to relax, a great school. And I haven’t forgotten that for 30 years,” Zoc said while also adding a couple of anecdotes when Duda started showing (and drawing) him rotations on the wall of a room, at four in the morning.

He also remembered how tough it was for him the morning he heard the news and how he simply couldn’t hide his emotions despite having to coach the team that day.

He simply finished the speech with: “Godfather, you’re here (showing at his heart) forever and you will forever be. Thank you.”

Rudy Gobert has been working on starting up a youth academy and his project has been gifted with an outdoor court in Levallois-Perret near the Seine river. It was built over an older and decaying court.

The two-time NBA All-Star and three-time Defensive Player of the Year unveiled the court that will be at the center of the Rudy Gobert Academy. The project though won’t be focused just on athletic development and sports but will also offer lessons in English, writing, music and other courses. It is intended for kids ages 10-16.

Gobert cooperated with Nike to build the court out of recycled materials and with Etendart to assist with the educational activities of the academy.

“A dream come true. Thank you Nike for the tremendous support, thanks Ville de Lavallois for welcoming us. And of course big thanks to Etendard and Parade Studio for your amazing work. First of many,” Gobert wrote via Twitter while sharing a promo video as well.

With that in mind, Panathinaikos and European basketball legend Mike Batiste, who now has a coaching career in the US as an Orlando Magic assistant, will hold an online auction with collectibles he has owned since his era with the ‘Greens’ and the money will be donated to the fire victims in Greece, as he told ERASPOR.

“When you see such unpleasant news as the fires in Greece, your soul turns black and it is difficult to manage it,” Batiste said about the fires and his offer to help.

In the summer of 2020, Mike James signed a three-year contract extension with CSKA Moscow, making him one of the highest-paid players in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague competition. James was arguably one of the best players in Europe in the 2019-20 season, averaging 21.1 points per game on 45.6% shooting from inside the arc, and 42.0% from the three-point line.

The 2020-21 season started off perfectly for James and CSKA Moscow. His team was the No. 1 seed in the EuroLeague, and he was making a run at the MVP award. A series of run-ins, however, with coach Dimitris Itoudis in February and March changed James’ plans for the rest of the season. In late March, Itoudis indefinitely suspended James, and he returned to the States, where he would pursue an NBA return.

With no agency representing him in the States, James turned to his close friend, Mo Smith, who is involved in sports management and has connections around the NBA. Once James returned back home and CSKA released him, Denver’s pro personnel scout, Joe Connely, reached out to Mo Smith, expressing interest in James. “Denver wanted him [James]. Joe Connely was calling me, trying to get it done,” Smith tells Eurohoops.

At the same time, however, Brooklyn was also an option for James. Smith was on the phone with Brooklyn’s director of player personnel, and former CSKA Moscow player, JR Holden. “Mike didn’t have an agent,” he says. “I was acting as his agent.” Eventually, JR Holden with the help of Smith’s close friend, Mike Martin, got Mo Smith on the phone with Brooklyn’s general manager, Sean Marks, regarding a potential Mike James deal. Due to the fact that James didn’t have an agent, the deal had to get done through the NBPA. And so it did.

In a matter of hours, James had arrived in Brooklyn and was ready to sign his first 10-day contract with the Nets. “He would’ve been in Denver if it wasn’t for the Nets coming strong,” explains Smith.

What’s also interesting to add is the fact that Kevin Durant played a significant role in getting Mike James to Brooklyn. Durant’s brother, Tony is the business partner of Mo Smith and a close friend of Mike James, and so he wanted to see James in Brooklyn alongside his brother, Kevin. According to Smith, KD told the Nets front office that “if we got a chance at getting Mike James, let’s get him.”

James signed two 10-day contracts with Brooklyn, before landing a guaranteed contract until the end of the season and having the chance not just to return to the NBA, but to also make a run for the title.

The year is 1992 and two-time NBA champion with the Detroit Pistons Isiah Thomas is left out of the Dream Team that would represent the USA in the Barcelona Summer Olympics. Many urban myths appointed this “exclusion” to Michael Jordan, former leader of Team USA, after the events in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, when Detroit walked off the court without congratulating the Chicago Bulls for winning the title.

Grudge or not, and even though Jordan debunked this legend in 2020’s “The Last Dance” (episode 5), stating that “it wasn’t him”, Thomas had already started cutting his ties from the NBA. In the meantime, his agent, George Andrews, was already exploring other options as Thomas finally reached the end of his NBA run in 1994 with an unfortunate Achilles tendon tear.

Andrews had strong links with European basketball. He was the one who introduced Roy Tarpley to Olympiacos in 1993, while he was representing 4-time NBA All-Star with the Dallas Mavericks Rolando Blackman in his Euro-run with AEK, Olimpia Milano, Limoges, as well as 9-time NBA All-Star Dominique Wilkins, who later on lifted the 1996 EuroLeague title with Panathinaikos. Needless to say, the possibility of a Thomas leap to European basketball grew stronger as his NBA career came to an end.

“He [Andrews] was very satisfied with Tarpley’s run with Olympiacos, his salary, this and that…”, explained former Greek Basket League Vice President Vassilis Dimarelos, who was included in the talks between Olympiacos and Thomas’ agent, in a recent interview with Greek CosmoteSport.

In today’s numbers, such a move seems unthinkable, though we should consider the fact that back in the day, the top NBA contracts were still comparable to lucrative European deals. There were talks, though a deal was never reached, as Thomas decided to call it a day, to pursue coaching duties in the turn of the century.

After Michael Jordan and Tony Parker, a feature on the career of another basketball player is coming on Netflix. Only this one won’t be a documentary, but a biopic film.

According to exclusive Eurohoops sources, action hero Jason Statham has already been cast to star as Vassilis Spanoulis in an untitled Netflix project about the career of the Greek basketball legend. The film will be directed by four-time Oscar nominee and also one-time basketball player George Lanthimos.

A special de-aging process that was also used in Martin Scorcese’s “The Irishman” will be implemented so that Statham will look much younger than his current age of 53. The English actor will play Spanoulis from his early 20s to his mid 30s.

The movie will start in the city of Larissa, Greece where a young Spanoulis made his basketball beginnings with local teams. It will then depict some key events of Spanoulis’ early career: His first contract with Panathinaikos, his short stint with the Houston Rockets, his return to Greece and his rise to the top of EuroLeague with the Greens.

The second and main part of the film will begin with Spanoulis’ departure from Panathinaikos for archrival Olympiacos Piraeus and will focus on “Kill Bill’s” achievements with the Reds and the back-to-back EuroLeague championships and Final Four MVPs of 2012 and 2013.

Characters like Zeljko Obradovic, Dimitris Diamantidis and Dusan Ivkovic, have been listed as “cast priorities” due to the prominence of their roles in the film.  A casting call has also been made for a “Veteran coach around mid-40s with an American accent who has to deal with an ambitious and feisty rookie.”

In a latest development, Eurohoops also learned that Keanu Reeves will portray former longtime Panathinaikos captain and current co-general manager Fragkiskos Alvertis.

UPDATE: Happy April Fool’s!

As the Greek Basketball Federation elections have been rescheduled for May 23, turmoil has surfaced after a Federation employee has filed a complaint reporting attempted rape and sexual harassment by a member of the presidency of the Federation’s Board of Directors.

The Greek Deputy Minister of Sports Lefteris Avgenakis received the complaint last week and has sent over the case to the Prosecutor, as it was released via a press release Tuesday, for further investigation of the case.

The employee alleges the high-ranked member of the Federation for attempted rape in 2014, continued sexual harassment, retaliatory behavior, and abuse of power towards her between 2014 and 2018.

In the meanwhile, the Greek Ministry of Sports has called its federations to conduct their elections by April 10, though the Greek Basketball Federation announced Monday that it plans to conduct its own on May 23, citing “vulnerability of online voting”, due to the COVID-19 restrictions that prevent physical ballot.

Under the new Greek sports law, longtime president George Vasilakopoulos is not eligible for re-election. However, he is not facilitating the change of the administration, while there’s a debate which is expected to be a court case under Greek law about how many clubs have the right to vote in the upcoming elections.

According to the ministry, the number is around 500, however, the federation recently sent a voting list that included more than 800 clubs.

Amidst the coronavirus pandemic and social justice issues, the United States has been struck by another crisis after pro-Trump protesters stormed the US Capitol.

The NBA community reacted harshly to the incident which had fatalities and the National Guard was necessary to stop the riots.

However, not all in the basketball world are on one side and that goes for former players as well. One of them could be seen among the protesters as well. David Wood, who never hid his support of Trump, was present and even broadcasted the whole ordeal online.

Wood, 56, played professionally for two decades including stints with nine NBA teams as well as several European clubs. Among them, mostly Spanish teams: Barça, Baskonia, Unicaja, Murcia, Gran Canaria, and Fuenlabrada.
