With five players scoring in double figures, Bayern Munich defeated Syntainics MBC 96 – 87 to begin the 2023-24 German League season with a win and quite the offensive performance for the crowd in BMW Park.

Newcomer Leandro Bolmaro led Bayern scorers with 16 points while Isaac Bonga posted 16 points, six rebounds, and five rebounds. His fellow world champion with Germany Andreas Obst scored 15, Sylvain Francisco dropped 12 points and Elias Harris had 11 points in a very balanced output for Pablo Laso’s team.

In his first official game in Europe since his return from the NBA, veteran big man Serge Ibaka delivered six points (on 3-11 shots), five rebounds, and two blocks over 16:39 minutes. He wasn’t able to make shots but delivered some fine highlights.

Sad news from Germany. Dennis Kramer died on Sunday evening. He was 31.

Kramer succumbed to his injuries after a terrifying accident with his car in Gottingen, according to local police, as relayed by multiple reports in Germany.

Several German clubs shared in the mourning with posts on social media platforms. In the same context, the German Basketball Federation, DBB, pledged to honor his memory.

Taking a break in the summer from his four-year NCAA career with San Diego, he represented Germany at the junior level by participating in the 2010 U18 European Championship and the 2011 U20 European Championship. Later competing in the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju alongside Maodo Lo, he helped Germany rank second and capture the silver medals.

Highlighting his two-year spell with EWE Baskets Oldenburg, the Cologne native’s club career included 13 appearances in the 2016-17 edition of the Basketball Champions League and 11 appearances in the 2015-16 edition of the 7DAYS EuroCup since renamed BKT EuroCup.

Switching from college basketball in the USA to the second division of Germany, he quickly earned a spot in the top-tier division of the country and went on to log 188 games played in Beko / easyCredit BBL from 2014 to 2021. Following stints with TBB Trier and Oldenburg, a five-year run as a member of BG Gottingen concluded playing days at the professional level. Staying in the city of Lower Saxony, he resumed playing at the regional level.

Yago Dos Santos scored 10 in a row at the beginning of the fourth period and finished with 25 points plus eight assists as Ratiopharm Ulm beat Telekom Baskets Bonn 74 – 70 in Game 4 of the German League Finals to win the series 3-1 and claim the championship title.

This is just the second major trophy for Ulm in the history of the club after winning the German Cup in 1996. The team had played in the BBL Finals just three times before this season and now celebrates the title after eliminating EuroLeague sides ALBA Berlin and Bayern Munich in the playoffs before their matchup vs. reigning Basketball Champions League champion Bonn.

Bonn was actually up 51 – 59 at the end of the third quarter, but then everything turned upside down. Dos Santos dropped 10 unanswered points and then began sending assists all over the place to his teammates as Ulm delivered an 18-0 run to achieve an incredible swing and go up double figures.

TJ Shorts made it 72 – 69 for Bonn with two minutes to play but that was the closest his team got down the stretch. Bruno Caboclo hit a pair of free throws and his team remained beyond a shooting distance for the rest of the game.

Caboclo completed the game with 11 points and six rebounds while Brandon Paul contributed 15 points to Ulm’s triumph.

Shorts produced 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Bonn but shot 0-7 from the 3-point line. Jeremy Morgan scored 13 and Sebastian Herrera had 12 points.

In Game 2 of the easycredit BBL finals, Telekom Baskets Bonn had dominated Ratiopharm Ulm, tying the series. However, in Game 3, led by Karim Jallow’s 24 points, Ulm secured a victory with a score of 112-84, taking a 2-1 lead in the series and positioning themselves on the brink of the title.

Although Bonn’s previous 104-75 win seemed unbeatable, Ulm proved otherwise. Alongside Jallow’s contribution, Brandon Paul added 23 points, Bruno Caboclo scored 20, and Yago dos Santos flirted with a triple-double, accumulating 14 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Additionally, Josh Hawley achieved a double-double with 13 points and ten boards.

Tyson Ward was the main contributor for Bonn, scoring 21 points and narrowly missing a double-double with rebounds. Collin Malcolm and T.J. Shorts added 11 points each, while Sebastian Herrera finished with 10.

Gavel’s team displayed an impressive offensive performance, converting 18 three-pointers out of 40 attempts and shooting 24-28 from the free-throw line. They also outperformed their opponent in assists, with a total of 28, nine more than Bonn.

The potentially decisive game of the series is scheduled for June 16 at 20:30 CET on Ulm’s home court.

Finn Delaney led the winning side with 25 points, followed by Sebastian Herrera with 17 points, while T.J. Shorts contributed 16 points and nine assists. Jeremy Morgan and Deane Williams each added 13 points.

For Ulm, only Karim Jallow reached double figures, scoring 17 points. Robin Christen, Yago dos Santos, and Fedor Zugic each contributed nine points.

Bonn demonstrated exceptional shooting, going 16 for 35 from beyond the arc, and dominated the rebounding battle with 39 rebounds, 12 more than Ulm. Steals were also a key factor for Tuomas Iisalo’s team, as they recorded 13 steals compared to Ulm’s three.

Backed by traveling supporters, Telekom Baskets Bonn used a late surge fueled by T. J. Shorts II to defeat MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, 82-73, and sweep the best-of-five series of the easyCredit BBL Semifinals Saturday.

Shorts, 25, poured a game-high 20 points in Game 3. Possibly adding to the collection of individual accolades between the Basketball Champions League and Germany’s top-flight division, he is expected to lead the charge through the best-of-five championship series versus ratiopharm Ulm.

Javontae Hawkins and Leon Kratzer added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the team coached by Tuomas Iisalo in MHP Arena. Before Game 3, captain Karsten Tadda was ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing back surgery. However, the crazy winning streak was extended.

Bonn has not lost a game since dropping Game 1 of the BCL Playoffs series against SIG Strasbourg in early April. The ensuing 18-game winning streak includes capturing the Champions League title in Malaga. Tracking the last domestic loss, ALBA Berlin got the job done in mid-January.

Unable to contain Shorts and company all the way through the tight battle, Josh King’s side became the second victim of a sweep at the hands of Bonn in the 2023 Playoffs. Prentiss Hubb recorded 18 points and Will Cherry had 17 points in the last game of the 2022-23 season.

Bonn or Ulm to break the curse

Eliminating second-seeded ALBA in the Quarterfinals and third-seeded FC Bayern Munich in the Semifinals, Ulm completed the improbable run to the Finals yesterday, Friday.

Both held to runner-up status in every single appearance in Germany’s Finals, Bonn or Ulm will end up celebrating the first domestic league championship in team history.

Coach Andrea Trinchieri will leave FC Bayern Munich after getting swept against Ulm in the semifinals.

“That was my last game in Bayern,” said the Italian on Friday immediately after the end of the semifinals at Ulm (0-3).

Speaking about his days with the club, Trinchieri added: “I came to Bayern in the pandemic and the players and coaches found a way to go through a lot, to fight to the very end. I think this group deserved a title more. But in the crucial moments, luck turned its back on us. So we have two championship titles and two EuroLeague playoffs until game five. It can always be better, but we really gave everything we could.

I want to thank all my players who pushed their limits in difficult moments. I would like to thank Mr. Hainer for his tireless support, he gave me the confidence to lead the team into the new arena. I want to thank my partner Marko (Pesic), who didn’t want a coach back then, but a partner. Thank you for this sincere relationship. And I want to thank Daniele Baiesi, who has always been by my side, it was a very efficient cooperation with six titles. I also hug all my assistants who really gave me the maximum support. It’s over, it’s been a great ride. I had no regrets and people can now find a label for those three years. I did my best every day, made mistakes and corrected them. That’s it, thanks and goodbye”.

Coach Trinchieri had one thing to add about the last game: “I’m just mad that the ref gave me a technical in overtime in my last game. It’s really unbelievable, because I think it was a very unfair move at such a moment. Some referees think they are the police: you park your car two inches above the line and they give you a ticket. But we’re not cars, this isn’t about parking, it’s about two fighting teams and a great coach on the other side. That’s the only thing I regret today. Grazie e arrivederci .”

Trinchieri came to Bayern Munich in 2020 and was a Cup winner in 2021 and 2023. In addition, he was the coach that led the first German club to reach the playoffs in the Euroleague in 2021 and 2022 with the Munich team.

With Trinchieri’s departure, former Real Madrid Pablo Laso is set to replace him.

Ulm’s incredible playoff run in Germany continues. After defeating ALBA in the qourter finals, the seven seed now sweeps Bayern Munich and books a ticket to get finals, for the fourth time in club history and the first time after 2016.

In a nailbiter overtime game, Ulm managed to get the win that will be remembered for years. After being up 14 points (76-62) at the beginning of the fourth quarter, Bayern managed to pull off an incredible run that almost got them the win as they were up their points in the last minute. But the game went into overtime.

Ulm managed to stay composed, regain the lead get the win 104-102, and more importantly, get to the finals. Ulm is still waiting for their opponent as Bonn is currently up 2-0 against Ludwigsburg.

Bruno Caboclo had 22 points for Ulm, as did Cassius Winston for Bayern.

Jeremy Morgan with 23 points led the way on a 94-65 triumph for Telekom Bonn in Game 2 of the German BBL semifinals against MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg.

After an 80-71 win in Game 1 with Basketball Champions League MVP TJ Shorts scoring 22 points, the Basketball Champions League winners demonstrated their superiority and are one step away from the BBL finals.

Game 2 proved to be even easier for Bonn. Javontae Hawkins added 15 points for the winning side which had an eight-point lead at halftime (44-36) and dominated the second half, as the guests scored 29 points in 20 minutes.

Shonn Miller with 11 points was the top scorer of MHP Riesen.

It has to be noted that ratiopharm Ulm is leading 2-0 in their semifinal series against Bayern and have more than a good chance to make it to the finals, after beating ALBA Berlin in the quarterfinals.

Ulm is now leading 2-0, and will have two chances at home to book a place in the final, where they could meet Telekom Baskets Bonn or Riesen Ludwigsburg (Bonn leads 1-0).

This time Yago dos Santos led the way with 21 points and five assists, while his fellow countryman Bruno Caboclo added 17 with seven boards.

The experienced Brandon Paul followed with 14 points, while talented Spaniard Juan Nunez added 12, and Karim Jallow 10 points.

EuroCup quarterfinalists took control in the dying moments of the third quarter, grabbed the double-digit lead midway through the final period, and never looked back, grabbing a convincing win on the road to start the semifinals.

Talented Spanish player Juan Nunez led the way for Anton Gavel’s side with 19 points, Yago dos Santos added 18, while Bruno Caboclo finished the match with a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Experienced Brandon Paul added 11 points.

Bayern only had two players in double figures, with Cassius Winston scoring 13 points with seven assists and Freddie Gillespie adding 10.

The other semifinal series between Telekom Baskets Bonn and Riesen Ludwigsburg is due to start on Monday, May 29, at the home of the Basketball Champions League winners.

Explosive point guard Cassius Winston made 5/10 from the field for 16 points in Game 3 of the easyCredit BBL best-of-five series. Another former player of the Washington Wizards, Isaac Bonga followed with 15 points behind 7/12 field goals. Zylan Cheatham tallied eight points, 11 rebounds, two steals, and one block.

Paul Zipser was not available for head coach Andrea Trinchieri, similar to Othello Hunter (back), Vladimir Lucic (left hand), Augustine Rubit (Achilles), and Zan Mark Sisko (personal). As in Game 1 and Game 2, D.J. Seeley did not check in for Game 3 action.

For the team coached by Roel Moors, Till Pape stood out with a game-high 17 points. His side finished the first half with a one-point lead but was outscored by a margin of ten points in the third quarter. The deficit kept growing in the last ten minutes.

Ludwigsburg clinches as well

Following two consecutive away wins, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg topped EWE Baskets Oldenburg, 86-72, in MHP Arena to sweep the Quarterfinals series. Shonn Miller paved the way with 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block to his name. Will Cherry added 17 more points. On the opposite end, DeWayne Russell’s 27 points were not enough to extend the series.

Top-seeded Telekom Baskets Bonn, the recently crowned Basketball Champions League champions, currently lead Niners Chemnitz, 2-0, and are set to play Game 3 on the road tomorrow, Monday. Defending BBL champions, ALBA Berlin is instead trailing 2-1 in the series opposite ratiopharm Ulm with Game 4 scheduled for Wednesday.

The third straight win for the away team in the best-of-five series handed Anton Gavel’s side a 2-1 lead with Game 4 coming up at home next Wednesday. Javontae Hawkins set a new personal best for the 2022-23 season with 24 points and T.J. Shorts II combined 19 points with nine assists. Switching to the opposite venue, Game 3 will take place on Monday.

Additional Quarterfinals action expands to FC Bayern Munich and MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg on track to complete a three-game sweep over BG Gottingen and EWE Baskets Oldenburg, respectively, on Sunday.

On a 16-0 sprint to start the fourth quarter, ratiopharm Ulm blew out ALBA Berlin, 88-64, Sunday.

Producing the upset in the first postseason game of Germany’s top-tier division, Anton Gavel’s side went up 1-0 in the best-of-five series of the easyCredit BBL Playoffs.

Brazilian point guard Yago dos Santos paved the way with a game-high 24 points. More Brazilian contribution in the form of Bruno Caboclo’s 16 points to go with five rebounds and four steals in Game 1 of the Quarterfinals series. Brandon Paul’s 14 points including four out of the ten triples connected for Ulm. On the opposite end, experienced big Johannes Thiemann tallied a team-high 11 points.

Apart from the bad news on losing homecourt advantage, the team coached by Israel Gonzalez enjoyed Tamir Blatt (right thumb) lasting just over 13 minutes with three points, three assists, and two rebounds in his first appearance since late March. Marcus Eriksson (foot) and Yovel Zoosman (knee) were instead ruled out along with Gabriele Procida.

The defending champions of the German league will switch to the opposite venue hoping to recover homecourt advantage in Game 2 on Wednesday. The rest of the Quarterfinals matchups and respective Game 1 contests stretch from Tuesday to Wednesday. Coming out of the Basketball Champions League Final Four, top-seeded Telekom Baskets Bonn will start the series opposite Niners Chemnitz Wednesday. FC Bayern Munich versus BG Gottingen and EWE Baskets Oldenburg versus MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg will launch Tuesday.

A few months after being appointed as the new head coach at Umana Reyer Venice, Neven Spahija inked a contract extension.

Spahija, 60, penned a multiyear contract, the team announced Thursday.

“Being the head coach of Reyer is a great honor for me. I also want to thank the staff and the players,” noted the Croatian play-caller commenting on the new deal.

The former assistant of the Memphis Grizzlies and Atlanta Hawks, also a veteran of 160 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games as the head coach of multiple top-shelf European teams, landed in Venice last February.

Under his guidance, the Italian club reached the 7DAYS EuroCup Playoffs but was knocked out by Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv in the Eightfinals. In Italy’s LBA Serie A UnipolSai, his side finishing fourth in the Regular Season secured the homecourt advantage for the first round of the Playoffs and the best-of-five series opposite Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari.

Ludwigsburg extends Josh King

In a similar situation, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg reached an agreement with Josh King to extend his contract until the end of the 2023-24 season, as announced during the official team preview of the easyCredit BBL Playoffs Quarterfinals best-of-five series versus EWE Baskets Oldenburg.

“I am very happy to continue as head coach here in Ludwigsburg,” he said.

The former assistant of John Patrick succeeded the longtime head coach of the German club ahead of the 2022-23 season. Apart from the domestic campaign, his side also competed in the Basketball Champions League until being eliminated by Limoges CSP in a crazy best-of-three Play-In series in January.
