The latest dominating display for Telekom Baskets Bonn in Singapore produced the win, 111-50, against Zhejiang Golden Bulls on Saturday.

The reigning champions of the Basketball Champions League meeting the Basketball Champions League Americas counterpart Sesi Franca will decide the new FIBA Intercontinental Cup champion tomorrow, Sunday.

After scoring 28 points in the Gameday 1 win against Al Manama, Sam Griesel threw in 16 more points topping the list of six double-digit scorers for the team coached by Roel Moors. Glynn Watson Jr. had 13 points adding to the second lopsided win in a row to secure the top seed in Group B.

The Chinese Basketball Association outfit struggled, failing to build on the competitive showing beyond the top half of the first quarter. Reggie Perry registered a team-high ten points in the disappointing team effort.

Ignite to seek first win in a classification game

Earlier, Sesi Franca confirmed the top seed in Group A with a 98-89 victory versus NBA G League Ignite.

Veteran forward Jhonatan Dos Santos combined 19 points with eight rebounds. Georginho, heading to the reigning champion of Germany’s easyCredit BBL ratiopharm Ulm for the upcoming season, shared the game-high 19 points. On the losing end, John Jenkins and London Johnson tallied 15 points each.

In the final opportunity to salvage a win in Singapore, Ignite will play for fifth place against the champion of the inaugural season of the West Asia Super League Al Manama.

Settling in the middle of the group with a 1-1 record, Basketball Africa League winner Al Ahly will face Zhejiang Golden Bulls for third place in the final rankings.

After winning the 2023 Basketball Champions League – the first trophy in the German club’s history -, Telekom Baskets Bonn got the opportunity to represent Europe in the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup, entering the competition against West Asia Super League champion Al Manama, from Bahrain.

In what ended up being an absolute domination from the beginning to the end, the German club won the encounter 105-50, shooting 42.2% from beyond the arc and being perfect at the free throw line on 12 attempts.

The 23-year-old small forward Sam Griesel was unstoppable for Roel Moors’ newest team, ending the game with a double-double of 28 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 6/9 from deep. “My teammates gave me the most confidence. Knowing I trusted them and they trusted me, we went out there and executed. We all want to win, we’re eager to do so”, he said after receiving the MVP of the Game Award.

Glynn Watson had also an impressive showing off the bench, scoring 15 points with 4 rebounds and 5  assists. On the Bahrain side, instead, Dominic Pointer had 14 points – with 7 turnovers – in his team’s loss, followed by Ahmed Haji’s 12 points. Overall, they had a rough shooting night from the field (17/57).

First time for Africa in the Intercontinental Cup

The second game of the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup in Singapore, unlike the first encounter which saw Telekom Baskets Bonn respecting the expectations, delivered a huge surprise: Al Ahly beat the NBA G-League Ignite 82-76, getting the first-ever victory for an African team in the competition.

The Egyptian side was dragged by the double-doubles of Mostafa Kejo (10 points and 13 rebounds) and of Omar Oraby (14 points and 11 rebounds), with also the former Miami Heat playmaker Norris Cole – who shot 4/17 from the field but still had 13 points and 9 assists – on board.

NBA G-League Ignite, instead, didn’t have the best of nights, considering the 18-year-old phenomenon Izan Almansa’s poor night of 4 points and 8 rebounds. Tyler Smith had 18 points and 6 rebounds in the loss, followed by John Jenkins and Ron Holland, who combined for 31 points.

The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is set to enter a new chapter of its long history in 2023, as FIBA and Sport Singapore have agreed to a three-year partnership that expands the event also to involve Asia for the first time and better reflects the modern club basketball landscape.

The Singapore Sports Hub is destined to become the first-ever venue in Asia to host the FIBA Intercontinental Cup as it will provide the stage for the 33rd edition of the event from September 21-24, 2023.

The competition will hence return to be staged in September so that it adapts more efficiently to the domestic and continental leagues’ calendar and the schedule of international players and to accommodate participating clubs better.

This agreement serves both as the realization of a basketball dream that dates back generations as well as a launchpad into the future era of global club basketball. Singapore, as a melting pot of cultures, is perhaps the ideal place to bring that vision to life,” commented FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

The first edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup in 1966 was an inspired event conceived by visionaries. They envisioned a competition that would assist in uniting different cultures through basketball but only dared to dream that one day the event would develop to the point where clubs from all corners of the globe compete in it,” Mr. Zagklis added.

The field of contenders is to expand from four to six teams, and in the September event in Singapore, a Chinese club jointly selected by FIBA and the Chinese Basketball Association will join four teams representing the same four continental leagues as in the past two editions. FIBA will announce the sixth participant in due course.

Those four teams will include the champions from the 2023 Basketball Africa League (BAL), a professional league featuring the top 12 club teams from 12 African countries operated in partnership between FIBA and the NBA, the champions of Basketball Champions League 2022-23, the champions of Basketball Champions League Americas 2022-23, and NBA G League Ignite, the team that was founded in 2020 to prepare top prospects for the NBA Draft.

The FIBA Intercontinental Cup is an important showcase for top club teams from outside the NBA and reflects the strength of professional basketball leagues around the world,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum. “We’re excited that NBA G League Ignite and the champions of the upcoming third season of the Basketball Africa League will be represented at this year’s tournament in Singapore, where we recently opened an office and where there is a growing affinity for the game,” Mr. Tatum added.

Building on the success of the FIBA 3X3 Asia Cup 2022, which will return for another edition this month, we are happy to host the FIBA Intercontinental Cup that will treat fans here to world-class high-impact basketball action. Ranked top five in our annual National Sports Participation Survey, basketball has always been a popular sport among Singaporeans. The FIBA Intercontinental Cup will further enhance the interest and inspire more people, especially the youth, to play and watch the sport,” shared Mr. Toh Boon Yi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Sport Singapore.

Come September 2023, Singapore will once again showcase its capability and innovation to the international sporting community as we welcome athletes, officials, and fans from around the world. FIBA Intercontinental Cup will be an important addition to our events portfolio that advances our nation’s sporting, social and economic aspirations,” Mr. Toh added.

We are delighted to be working with FIBA to host and organize Asia’s first FIBA Intercontinental Cup here in Singapore,” said Quek Swee Kuan, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Sports Hub. “Hosting the FIBA Intercontinental Cup reaffirms Singapore Sports Hub’s position as a premier destination for sporting events in Asia Pacific,” he added. “We look forward to welcoming the teams, officials, and fans to the Singapore Sports Hub for exciting hoop action this September.

Spanish club Lenovo Tenerife is the current trophy holder after winning the 32nd edition of the competition, in which they competed as the 2021-22 Basketball Champions League winners. That was the second event in a row that featured the champions of continental leagues from four different world regions.

Real Madrid remains the most decorated club in competition history, having conquered the trophy on five occasions.

Following the win by a margin of 70 points in the Semifinals, Lenovo Tenerife faced a tougher challenge in the championship game of the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup but led wire-to-wire and overcame Sao Paulo, 89-68, in Santiago Martin Sunday.

Bruno Fitipaldo and Sasu Salin both poured 15 points to share the team high but the experienced Uruguayan combo guard was named tournament MVP. Aaron Doornekamp followed with 13 points in the Final. Giorgi Shermadini finished with 12 points.

Txus Vidorreta’s side, reigning defending champions of Europe’s Basketball Champions League, lifted the Intercontinental Cup for the third time in team history. Similar to previous triumphs in 2017 and 2020, the champion was determined in the San Cristobal de La Laguna, Canary Islands.

From getting into double-digits late in the first half, Tenerife quickly pulled further away after the break. The lead initially peaked at 22 points. In a commanding position, Tenerife stopped the 2021-22 Basketball Champions League Americas winners from reducing the deficit under ten points and instead went up by 23 points down the stretch.

Despite scoring a game-high 18 points, Henrique Coelho was not enough for the team coached by Bruno Mortari, son of former Intercontinental Cup champion with Sirio in 1979, Claudio. Tulio Da Silva posted a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double.

RGV Vipers win the third-place game

Playing for third place, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers wrapped up their second participation in the Intercontinental Cup with a comfortable win, 107-84, against the defending Basketball Africa League champion US Monastir. Former Texas Tech standout Jarrett Culver produced 34 points with 13/15 field goals, including 6/8 triples.

Lenovo Tenerife aims for their third Intercontinental Cup trophy and will play against Sao Paulo in Sunday’s final after a rare 70-point win in the first semifinal against US Monastir.

That’s not a typo, the final score was 112-42 with Tim Abromaitis scoring 20 points on a balanced team effort. The hosts shot 62% from the field, including 20/35 threes, while the losing side just 29% (15/51).

Jerome Randle with 14 points and Michael Roll with 11 didn’t have any help, as the Tunisian champions of BAL couldn’t compete with the defending Basketball Champions League winners.

In the first semifinal, Sao Paulo defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 91-70. The winners of the BCL Americas were too much for the NBA G League title holders, leading by 16 at halftime and by 30 (68-38) in the third quarter.

Malcolm Miller with 24 points was the top scorer of the game, while Tulio Da Silva finished with 19 points, 15 rebounds, and three steals.

Lenovo Tenerife will face US Monastir in the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup Semifinals. Besides the Basketball Champions League and Basketball Africa League representatives, the G League’s Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Basketball Champions League Americas’ Sao Paulo shape the other battle for a spot in the championship game.

The draw revealing the matchups of the four contenders was held Friday. The tournament follows 10-12 February in Tenerife.

Per the press release: “The FIBA Intercontinental Cup official draw ceremony took place on Friday, revealing the path that each of the four trophy contenders will have to navigate in the big tournament set to take place in Tenerife, Spain from February 10-12, 2023.

The first Semi-Final – the game that will raise the curtain on the 32nd edition of the competition on February 10 – will see Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the 2022 NBA G League winners, go up against Brazil’s São Paulo, the 2022 Basketball Champions League Americas champions.

In the second Semi-Final, tournament hosts Lenovo Tenerife, the reigning Basketball Champions League champions, will face off with Tunisia’s US Monastir, the 2022 Basketball Africa League winners.

The winners of the two Semi-Finals will do battle in the Final on Sunday, February 12, with the 3rd-Place Game taking place earlier that day. The venue for all four contests is Pabellón Insular Santiago Martin, which also played host to the 2020 edition of the event, and the exact tip-off times will be confirmed in the coming days.

The ‘Salón Noble’ room in the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife building, adorned with murals that have been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, provided the spectacular stage for the ceremony.

Meanwhile BCL CEO Patrick Comninos, Spanish Basketball Federation Competitions Director Elisa Aguilar and ACB General Director Jose Miguel Calleja Bermejo were on hand to conduct the draw that concluded the ceremony.

Brazil’s Flamengo will be the reigning FIBA Intercontinental Cup champions for another month as they won the previous edition, in February 2022 in Cairo, Egypt. Spanish giants Real Madrid, who have lifted the coveted trophy on five occasions, remain the most successful club in the history of the competition.”

Flamengo took complete control of defending champions Hereda San Pablo Burgos from the get-go and with a 75-62 win, they lifted their second FIBA Intercontinental Cup in Cairo.

Under the watchful eye of Greek NT legend Vassilis Spanoulis, Flamengo reclaimed the cup for the first time since 2014, while they were the runner-ups of the 2019 event when AEK prevailed in the final.

Carlos Olivinha led Flamengo with 17 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists, Lucas Martinez added 15 points, 5 rebounds along with 5 assists, Brandon Robinson posted 13 points and Franco Balbi had 10.

Martinez was named the tournament’s MVP, receiving the trophy from Spanoulis among celebrations with his team.

From Burgos’ side, Vitor Benite had 14 points, Tarik Phillip scored 11 and Xabi Rabaseda picked up 8 points.

Earlier on Sunday, Lakeland Magic made history to take down Zamalek for the third-place game 113-78 and became the first NBA G-League team to score a victory in the tournament.

Five Lakeland players scored at least 16 points, though it was Jeff Dowtin who led the way with a double-double of 21 points and 11 assists along with 5 rebounds. Hassani Gravett scored 22 points, while Devin Cannady and Aleem Ford both added 18 points.

Edgar Sosa led the way for the Egyptian side with 18 points, while Ike Diogu posted a big double-double with 13 points and 15 boards.

After 56 years, FIBA Intercontinental Cup will be held for the first time in Africa. The destination will be Cario, Egypt in February 2022.

Zamalek SC of Cairo will be the first African team to participate in the competition. They will face San Pablo Burgos, Flamengo, and the Lakeland Magic as the opposition.

Per FIBA:

The next edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup is set to mark a landmark in the history of the competition which started 56 years ago, as it will be held in February 2022 in Cairo, Egypt, taking place in an African country for the first time.

The event is poised to further enhance its unique transatlantic status by also becoming the first club competition in basketball history to feature contenders that will be representing four different regional leagues.

Zamalek SC of Cairo, fresh off being crowned champions of the inaugural Basketball Africa League campaign, will reach another milestone by becoming the first African club to compete in the FIBA Intercontinental Cup.

Reigning FIBA Intercontinental Cup champions and Basketball Champions League 2020-21 winners Hereda San Pablo Burgos are headlining the field of participants, looking to become the first club to win back-to-back Intercontinental Cup trophies since fellow Spaniards Real Madrid achieved the feat in 1997.

Brazil’s Flamengo were crowned Basketball Champions League Americas 2020-21 champions and will be returning to the Intercontinental Cup after three years, when they reached the Final at home in Rio de Janeiro but lost to AEK Athens.

Lakeland Magic, the Orlando Magic affiliate that clinched the NBA G League title in 2020-21, will be making their first appearance in the intercontinental contest, picking the baton from fellow G League clubs Austin Spurs and Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

“We are very excited and looking forward to this truly historical moment, when the FIBA Intercontinental Cup will finally take place in Africa and will feature an African club,” commented FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

“The 2022 event will mark a turning point for the competition and it’s another important step towards fulfilling FIBA’s strategic objective of shaping the landscape of international club competitions,” Mr. Zagklis added.

The big event, hosted by the Egyptian Basketball Federation at the Hassan Mostafa Sports Hall in Cairo, will tip off on Friday, February 11, 2022 with the two Semi-Finals and conclude on Sunday, February 13, 2022 with the Final and the 3rd-Place game.

“It’s an honor to host the FIBA Intercontinental Cup and it’s a proud occasion for Egyptian sport and for the Egyptian Basketball Federation,” said Mr. Magdy Abofrekha, President of the Egyptian Basketball Federation.

“Organizing this competition is a new step towards proving our ability to once again host global events, as we hosted the FIBA U19 World Cup in 2017 and many other international tournaments. We are looking forward to meeting our friends in Cairo and witnessing an historic event together.”

The 2022 edition also marks a return to the four-team format that was successfully reinstated in 2019. In 2021 the FIBA Intercontinental Cup was played in a single-game Final, as FIBA adapted the format due to the pandemic. The Final was held in Buenos Aires and Burgos defeated Argentina’s Quimsa 82-73 to lift the trophy.

Real Madrid are the most successful club in competition history, having won the title on five occasions, the most recent one being their 2015 success over Brazil’s Bauru, in Sao Paulo.

The draw of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup 2022 will take place early next year.

Hereda San Pablo Burgos landed in Spain on Sunday night off a long trip from Argentina. On Saturday evening, the Spanish outlet captured the FIBA Intercontinental Cup title, five months after winning the Basketball Champions League and earning the right to compete for the Intercontinental Cup. Two international championships, also the first two titles in club history.

“I don’t think there is a team in the world that has conquered two titles at this stage of the year,” guessed head coach Joan Penarroya, relays FIBA.Basketball, “Before this year started, who could have predicted that we would win the BCL and then come here to Buenos Aires and win the FIBA Intercontinental Cup, it’s a tremendous accomplishment.”

Moving back not so long ago, Burgos got to Spain’s second division, LEB Oro, in 2015, and in 2017 found itself in the ACB for the first time. The 2019-20 Champions League campaign ending late in Athens with the Final 8 triumph marked its inaugural European club competition run and actually began way back in the qualifying rounds prior to the Regular Season.

“I think they should do a movie with our story,” said president Felix Sancho said, “It might sound like I am joking, but all this is truly very big. What this club has achieved is nowhere near usual.”

Up next, the Spanish Copa del Rey with a quarterfinal matchup against Lenovo Tenerife, Thursday at Madrid.

“In less than a week we are playing to fight for another title and that’s what we’re going for,” noted Penarroya, “It’s time for us to enjoy the players we have and the season we’ve been having. The only pity is we can’t do that with our fans.”

Intercontinental Cup MVP and captain Vitor Benite would also prefer to enjoy success with the fans if circumstances permitted.

“The most difficult part about this victory and this year, in general, is that, due to the circumstances created by the pandemic, we can’t have the chance to share the trophy with our fans and the city the way we would have liked,” mentioned the Brazilian guard, “But for sure our fans are enjoying this moment and this makes me very happy.”

From Greece and the Basketball Champions League to Argentina and the FIBA Intercontinental Cup proudly shapes up the path for Hereda San Pablo Burgos. The Spanish club defeated Quimsa, 82-73, Saturday for a second international title in four months.

Captain Vitor Benite back in familiar South American territory made out a team-high 19 points en route for his second Intercontinental Cup victory following up on his 2014 trophy with Flamengo. The defending champions of FIBA’s premier European club continental competition went up 26 but held off a furious rally cutting the deficit to six points with two minutes left to lift the trophy.

Thad McFadden registered 16 points, 14 coming in the first half. Ken Horton and Dejan Kravic added 12 points apiece, while Cuban Jasiel Rivero posted a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double. On the losing end, Brandon Robinson fired a game-high 25 points.

A second boost of excitement for Burgos fans in these troubled times. Joan Penarroya’s side started the 2019-20 BCL season from the second qualifying round but went all the way to the top and paired its recent triumph on the road against AEK with an even longer trip for the Intercontinental Cup. A fourth win in a row for the European team of the tournament.

Restrictions of the coronavirus pandemic reduced the playing field as the 30th edition of the Intercontinental Cup featured the Basketball Champions League winners of Europe and Americas directly in the final held at Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A trip back across the Atlantic Ocean for the remainder of the BCL and domestic campaigns coming up for Burgos.

Putting yourself on the map in any area of expertise is certainly and always a challenge. Hereda San Pablo Burgos has done a great job in recent months but looks far away from completing the task and calling it a day. The Basketball Champions League title holders will face their Basketball Champions League Americas counterparts, Quimsa, tonight, Saturday (22:00 CET), in a winner-takes-all FIBA Intercontinental Cup final at Buenos Aires.

The Spanish outlet representing a municipality of about 180,000 residents captured its first-ever title last September overcoming AEK in Athens in the Champions League final held in Athens. The 2019-20 season was completed late via a Final Eight in Greece due to the coronavirus pandemic halting action just before the scheduled launch of the quarterfinals.

The team led by Joan Penarroya with health safety remaining the top priority for all involved parties traveled to Argentina and will take on Quimsa. Apart from the traditional battle of totally different basketball approaches, Burgos aims for its second international title, which would also be the second overall in club history. Experienced guard, Alex Renfroe, will be out due to his knee injury.

On the other hand, Vitor Benite will be available. The Brazilian guard was actually crowned Intercontinental Champion back in 2014 attached to Flamengo. His team prevailed in a two-game series by an aggregate score, 156-146, over Maccabi Tel Aviv.

“First, it’s really amazing to be able to compete for a championship at this moment of the year, in this very particular season that we are living through,” he told FIBA.Basketball, “Second, it’s really big for me personally because if we win it’s going to be my second time after winning it the first time with Flamengo, it would be truly special.”

This will be the 30th edition of the Intercontinental Cup with the first dating back to 1965. Real Madrid has captured the championship five times making the most out of the eight titles ending up in Spain, most compared to any participating country. Burgos hopes to add to the winning tradition.

“It is a big tournament, you play against the champions of another continent so it’s always a really interesting image to see two different teams and two different cultures collide in a game, to see how we play the game in the Americas and how we play the game in Europe,” explained Benite, “To me it’s amazing and I think it means a lot to every player because it’s a trophy and it’s always big.”

Burgos is on the rise despite the pandemic affecting everything and everybody. Benite and teammates hope to deliver yet another international triumph to the team’s loyal supporters.

“It would be big for the city of Burgos because, like everybody, people here are going through a tough time now but the club is getting bigger, the team is playing well, so it would be great to gift them a happy moment, and there is nothing like winning a title when you play sports.” he mentioned.

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis confirmed the one-game format and the venue of the 2021 Intercontinental Cup during the end-of-year press conference held Wednesday.

Hereda San Pablo Burgos after capturing the Basketball Champions League title in Athens last September will make the trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina to take on the Basketball Champions League Americas champion Quimsa. The game to determine the next Intercontinental champion will be scheduled in early February 2021.

The previous FIBA Intercontinental Cup editions since the relaunch in 2019 and 2020 featured four teams, the top sides of the BCL Europe, FIBA Americas League, the NBA G League, and the host. However, the coronavirus pandemic forced reducing the field to just two teams this year.

A plan for the health security of the members of the involved teams is in place, as noted by Zagklis.

A former player of Olympiacos and Panathinaikos and also a fan favorite of Iberostar Tenerife, Giorgos Bogris talks after winning to the Intercontinental Cup about the status of his team, the challenges of the competition and the next big goal of the club, the Spanish Copa Del Rey.

How big is to win the Intercontinental Cup?

Today we wanted to win this very important title, the Intercontinental FIBA Cup, in our house, with our crowd, our fans and we’re very happy to achieve the goal. We have been working for this for many months now with an excellent coaching staff and were really happy.

The tournament had four great teams. The G-League champion, the champion of BCL Americas, the defending champion of BCL, Tenerife…. Does it make it more special?

It’s a very very important title, we’ve managed to win the final against a very important team like Virtus, a Euroleague level team with amazing players and awesome coaching staff, and achieving this goal against such an important rival makes this Intercontinental Cup even more amazing and deserves more credit.

You are the key man says coach Txus Vidorreta…

Well, I’m more than happy to be here, coming here and being able to work with such an amazing group of people and an amazing staff lead by Txus. Hopefully, I’ll be able to play here for many years, I can call Tenerife my second home. MY job is not to put numbers, stats don’t matter, my job is to win, I only want to sacrifice for the good of the team and I think I’m good at this task, I like my job. I bring what the canary people want: work, sacrifice, joy… and many more.

What is the secret? This past summer there was a roster overhaul, all players are new but it seems it doesn’t matter…

The key is the coach, the mentality of the team, it’s a big team that has built his own brand name winning important games, we don’t have fear of playing against no team, everyone has stepped forward… Me, Marcelinho, Sasu, Shermadini, everyone has done their job to change totally the focus and mentality and we have team and Project for a while, we will bring more smiles to the fans, happiness, we will continue with this mentality, winning… We’re a reality, no longer a surprise. Now when we step on the court we’re favored to win, we’ve come a long way from three or four years back. This is no longer a Cinderella story.

And with no time left to rest you have the challenge of Copa Del Rey. Are you ready?

Now we have two days to rest in order to prepare for another goal we have with the Copa del Rey in Málaga against a very tough first game against Andorra.
