Great news from the Kim Tillie camp.

He underwent surgery to remove a testicular tumor last Thursday, as announced by Cholet in late March. Recovering from the operation at home, the experienced forward/center is doing well and even hopes to play again before the conclusion of the 2022-23 season.

“I feel almost no more pain and I can walk, so it’s really good,” said Tillie, “For the next two or three weeks, I will continue recovering at home before considering trying to finish the season with Cholet.”

Tillie, 34, is also waiting to find out whether the tumor was cancerous.

The former Utah standout from 2006 to 2010 in the NCAA actually helped Cholet eliminate Kalev/Cramo and advance to the FIBA Europe Cup finals with the surgery scheduled to take place on a later date. The French big chipped in three points and five rebounds over 31 minutes in the two-leg series. In the Finals of FIBA’s second-tier European club continental competition, the French club will take on Anwil Wloclawek in the home-and-away series on 19 and 26 April.

Depending on recovery, Tillie will attempt to get back on the court deeper in the 2022-23 schedule to help Cholet in France’s Betclic Elite LNB Pro A. The team coached by Laurent Vila currently sits fifth in the standings with a 16-11 W-L tally and is on track for a second straight berth in the domestic league’s Playoffs after claiming the eighth seed last season.

After remaining available for Cholet in the FIBA Europe Cup semifinals, Kim Tillie will be operated on to remove a testicular tumor and sidelined indefinitely.

The French club updated the health status of Tillie on Monday noting that he will stay with the team until 5 April.

Tillie, 34, is expected to play against Kalev/Cramo Wednesday and possibly in the second half of the two-game series in La Meilleraie next week. The advancing side will take on Anwil Wloclawek or Karhu in a two-game series to determine the next champion of the FIBA Europe Cup, FIBA’s second-tier club continental competition of Europe behind the Basketball Champions League.

The experienced forward/center averaged 4.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game over 16 appearances in helping Cholet reach the FIBA Europe Cup semifinals. In France’s Betclic Elite LNB Pro A, he has 4.8 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest with his side currently sitting third in the standings behind AS Monaco and Metropolitans 92 with a 16-9 record.

The veteran of 124 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games, also of 30 appearances in 7DAYS EuroCup, represented France in the 2016 Olympic Games and contributed to the run to bronze medals in the 2014 FIBA World Cup.

Tillie spent four years with Utah in the NCAA and launched his pro career in 2010 back in Europe. His younger brother, Killian played for Gonzaga and made his way to 54 NBA games with the Memphis Grizzlies between the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.

On Wednesday, the Basketball Champions League Quarter-Finals picture was almost complete, with seven of the eight final participants which took their spots. However, this wasn’t the only competition in which things got clearer, as the FIBA Europe Cup ended its Quarter-Finals stage.

Following Cholet Basket’s victory against Budivelnyk Kyiv on Tuesday, BC Kalev/Cramo, Karhu Basket, and Anwil Wloclawek joined the list of qualified teams in the Semi-Finals.

The same happened to Anwil Wloclawek, which lost against Gaziantep in the first leg in Poland but managed to turn things around on the road in Turkey, thanks to 19 points from former Reyer Venezia player Victor Sanders. Codi Miller-McIntyre did his best with 29 points but he wasn’t enough.

Karhu Basket wrote history as the first Finnish team which qualified for the FIBA Europe Cup Semi-Finals, with former Brindisi forward Dikembe Dixson scoring 18 points.

Finally, BC Kalev/Cramo found upset wins both in Germany and Estonia against Brose Bamberg. The former won 85-67 on the road against Oren Amiel’s team.

The seedings for the FIBA Europe Cup 2022-23 season were confirmed on Wednesday, with the participating clubs set to learn their opponents on Thursday, July 14 at the regular season draw, streamed live on FIBA’s YouTube channel.

This season’s competition includes a total of 32 clubs, including both teams placed directly in the Regular Season and those competing in the Qualifiers. Furthermore, 19 clubs from the Basketball Champions League Qualification Tournaments have opted in to participate in the FIBA Europe Cup if they do not qualify for the BCL Regular Season, with a maximum of 18 clubs participating in the FIBA Europe Cup Regular Season.

According to FIBA, a total of 32 clubs registered for this season’s competition, specifying that the best-ranked team from each of the Top 10 national federations in the club competition rankings is awarded a direct berth in the Regular Season.

The 10 clubs with a direct place in the Regular Season are the following:

Kangoeroes Basket Mechelen (BEL)
BC Balkan (BUL)
HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim (GER)
Hapoel Galil Elion (ISR)

The 22 clubs that are set to compete in the four Qualifier tournaments will be divided into six pots (seeded and unseeded) for the draw, based on the clubs’ results in the FIBA Europe Cup during the previous three seasons.

There will be 10 seeded clubs that will enter the tournaments directly in the Semi-Final Stage and those are the four teams in Pot 1, the four teams in Pot 2 and two teams that will be drawn from the four in Pot 3.

*In case this club qualifies to the BCL Regular Season, this spot would be filled by one of the runners-up of the FEC Qualifiers.

Bahcesehir College met Unahotels Reggio Emilia in the Final of the 2021-22 FIBA Europe Cup and delivered a convincing display in both games to sweep the series and leave no doubt about the champions of the competition.

The Final was played in a home-and-away format with the total aggregate score deciding the outcome. Bahcesehir left nothing to complex calculation and they won Game 2 with 90-74 for a total of 162-143.

Jamar Smith led the scorers with 17 points while Jamal Jones added 14 in addition to Sam Dekker and Tarik Black’s 12 points each. Dekker and Black had key roles in closing out the game in the last five minutes.

On the Italian team’s side, Arturs Strautins and Stephen Mark Thompson Jr. logged 19 points each as the only double-digit scorers for their squad.

Strautins also grabbed 11 boards while Andrea Cinciarini dished out nine assists next to his eight points. He also turned the ball over seven times and his performance was a far cry from the previous display in Game 1 when he banked in 20 points.

This is a huge success for Bahcesehir, making a historic achievement for the club that was founded just five years ago. This is their first-ever trophy and they did it on the European stage where they debuted in 2019. They were the semifinalist in FIBA Europe Cup in the 2019-20 campaign.

Bahcesehir Koleji announced the addition of Sam Dekker on Saturday.

Dekker, 27, has been a free agent since early November. He was placed on the NBA waivers list by the Toronto Raptors before his contract became fully guaranteed. He was held to one limited appearance in the 2021-22 Regular Season.

The Wisconsin product opted to return to Turkey after his 2020-21 stint at Turk Telekom. The remaining overseas experience stems from Lokomotiv Kuban through the 2019-20 season. He had made his way to 12 Basketball Champions League games with the Turkish side after ten appearances in the 7DAYS EuroCup as a member of the team based in Krasnodar.

Coming up next, the FIBA Europe Cup. His new side was recently drawn in Group L of the second round along with Avtodor Saratov, London Lions, and Bakken Bears. The top two teams will advance to the Playoffs and quarterfinals of the tournament. At the domestic level, the team based in Istanbul carries a balanced 5-5 record. Upcoming fixtures feature a visit at defending Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Anadolu Efes Sunday and a home game opposite the Lions Wednesday.

Back in 2015, Dekker was selected by the Houston Rockets with the 18th overall pick of the draft. His run at Houston stretched two seasons before briefer spells at the Los Angeles Clippers, Washington Wizards, Cleveland Cavaliers, and most recently with the Raptors. Overall, he played in 205 contests between the five teams generating career averages of 5.4 points, 3 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.2 blocks per contest.

Casademont Zaragoza announced that the team has added Deon Thompson to the roster for the remainder of the season

Last season, Thompson averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds over 36 Spanish League games with Unicaja Malaga.

“With the incorporation of Deon Thompson we intend to gain consistency and solidity, since he is a player who knows the Endesa League and who has a lot of experience after competing in great teams and at the highest level,” coach Jaume Ponsarnau said.

“That is why we believe that his arrival can help us to be more competitive. We think he can make a good pair with Hlinason as they are complementary players: Tryggvi’s is deeper and Thompson’s can give us a new record when it comes to direct blocking, where we are getting little benefit. This, together with his ability to open the field, can also help other players find better situations, such as cuts or penetrations. In addition, he is a player who dominates the game from behind, which can help us to consolidate our low post.”

Kenan Sipahi has signed with Casademont Zaragoza, the team announced Wednesday.

A couple of days ago, the Aragonese team had confirmed a right knee injury for Omar Cook. The experienced point guard will be sidelined for the next three months. He had joined Zaragoza in July following his 2020-21 stint at Hereda San Pablo Burgos.

Sipahi, 26, last played for Fenerbahce Beko. He averaged 1.6 points per Turkish Airlines EuroLeague match, 3.3 points per Playoffs contest in Turkey’s BSL, and 7.1 points per appearance in the Regular Season of the Turkish League in his second Fener stint.

The Turkish point guard carries the experience of 57 EuroLeague games between Fenerbahce and Pinar Karsiyaka. He has also made his way to 42 appearances in the Basketball Champions League as a member of Besiktas. Up next, the FIBA Europe Cup. His new team will be up against UnaHotels Reggio Emilia, Avtodor Saratov, and Hapoel Gilboa Galil in Regular Season Group D of the 2021-22 edition of the club continental tournament.

Sipahi also spent three years at Tofas Bursa before jumping to Fenerbahce in 2013. He moved to Karsiyaka for 2015-16 prior to a three-year stint at Besiktas.

His move to Zaragoza additionally marks his return to Spain’s ACB. He joined Sevilla in 2019-20 for his lone season outside Turkey. His abroad experience generated 7.3 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per contest.

Zaragoza will bump into Baxi Manresa at home to start the 2021-22 ACB Regular Season on Sunday, 19 November. The Europe Cup opener comes up on October 13 with Avtodor visiting the Pabellon Principe Felipe.
